The internet is full of advertisements for supposedly miraculous massagers that will keep you forever young and beautiful.
These massagers have different modes:
- Microcurrents make the skin more elastic, improve skin tone, and reduce the appearance of expression lines.
- The ion therapy mode improves overall tissue immunity, relieves skin fatigue, and also has antibacterial properties.
- The heating mode eliminates dark circles under the eyes.
- The cooling mode tightens the skin and reduces puffiness.
Is it worth rushing to buy one?
Let’s take a look at how these devices work to see how effective they really are.
- Microcurrents can relieve vascular spasms, slightly reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes, and reduce puffiness and pastiness.
- Heating the tissues does not help to combat dark circles under the eyes: the face is structured in such a way that the eyes are located deep, resulting in shadows forming under them.
If you have thin skin, blood vessels and muscles may show through it. This issue should be addressed by a cosmetologist, who can restore volume with fillers.
For pigmentation, choose cosmetics with a lightening component (vitamin C, azelaic acid, alpha-arbutin, etc.).
Poor sleep and smoking play an important role in the appearance of dark and blue circles under the eyes.
- Cooling can naturally reduce swelling and invigorate the skin. These devices mainly have contact cooling elements/plates that eliminate swelling; good results can be achieved by combining this with lymphatic drainage massage.
However, patches/fabric masks from the refrigerator can provide a similar effect. Some people use ice, but this can cause blood vessels to spasm and then dilate. In addition, ice cubes that melt during the procedure form “patches,” which is not very good.
But you can use ice correctly by wrapping it in napkins and letting it melt a little in the refrigerator, or by washing your face with cold water. After the procedure, it is necessary to apply a moisturizing cream.
Cold procedures are not recommended if you have rosacea, couperose, thin and sensitive skin, or cold allergy and panniculitis.
- With iontophoresis (or, more correctly, electrophoresis), active substances penetrate slightly deeper, without remaining in the upper layer of the skin.
We won’t confuse you; let’s say right away that they do not penetrate the dermis in any case.
We remind you that cosmetology and evidence-based medicine are on opposite sides. None of the hardware or injection methods, like creams, are subject to the same testing as medications.
Everything is based on subjective methods, and everyone focuses on visible results.
At the same time, home care devices will not have a noticeable effect, as they are designed according to the principle of “do no harm.”
Here are seven principles that can actually help you maintain young and healthy skin without using any devices:
- Cleanse with special products 2-3 times a day.
- Moisturize and nourish your skin according to your skin type.
- Protect your skin from the sun to prevent premature photoaging.
- Use masks and/or exfoliants once a week.
- Apply cream correctly, using the right amount.
- If there is swelling, do a light lymphatic drainage massage (using your hands/a roller/a Gua Sha scraper, often made of quartz or jade, which have an additional cooling effect).
- Healthy lifestyle, good sleep, no bad habits, drinking enough water.
A regular approach, the right device, and high-quality accompanying care products will together give some visible results.
